Congratulations, North Carolina! Living a healthy lifestyle is now possible for everyone statewide. In an effort to improve the health of all North Carolinians, the state General Assembly has recognized the need to support access to healthy food options for all communities. As a result, they are spending $250,000 to fund the statewide Healthy Corner Store Initiative! Way to go!
There are several hundred “food deserts” across the state (urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food). These “deserts” will soon have access to fresh produce from local farmers and fisherman at their neighborhood convenience stores.
Values Partnerships and the entire faith community is excited to celebrate this monumental win with our friends at MomsRising, one of our nation’s leading voices for issues affecting women, mothers and families. Research tells us that people who have access to healthier food options experience a lower risk of chronic disease. Not only will the Healthy Corner Store initiative improve the health of North Carolinians statewide, but it will also help decrease the rising rate of obesity.
